It’s not every day that a bill sails through the state legislature unopposed. But it turns out giving kids more freedom to play and explore without adult supervision is an idea pretty much everyone can get behind.

Colorado joined a growing list of states that have narrowed the definition of neglect to exclude activities a “reasonable and prudent” parent would deem safe for a child without supervision, such as walking to school, traveling to nearby recreational facilities and playing outside without an adult.

The new law aims to reduce the number of calls to child abuse hotlines and investigations into parents who allow their kids to have “reasonable independence.” Advocates say people of color and low-income parents face extra scrutiny from child welfare agencies, and they hope the new law will put an end to “unfettered” government intervention into the lives of these families.
